This stuff is SO not food! But hey, it’s marketed as such so people think it is!
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener. It’s in Diet Coke and most other products that say ’sugar free’ or ‘diet’. It’s listed in the ingredients on a label as Aspartame, E951 and the label will often say ‘contains phenylalanine’ . It may also show up as 962 which is Aspartame Acesulphame salt which is a mixture of Aspartame and Acesulphame (another artificial sweetener with many questions around it’s safety) or 961 which is Neotame, another suspect ingredient that is very similar to Aspartame.
Aspartame and NutraSweet are owned by Monsanto – the company responsible for the Genetic Engineering of the plants that are part of our staple food supply such as corn, soy and rice, Roundup (the weedkiller that kills) and the many court cases against small farmers in the US and Europe who have dared to try to keep saving their own seeds for planting (as they have always done in the past) – refusing to buy GE seed, specifically designed so that seed can not be saved as it loses it’s fertility after a couple of generations, from Monsanto.
Now, I have no idea why people actually consume this stuff (Aspartame I mean). It tastes BAD! When it first came out I tried it – a few times. I believed the marketing back then. It was gonna help me lose weight – sweetness without the sugar and the calories! But I didn’t like the taste. I thank god that I have a love for ‘food’. Real food. The stuff that tastes good. The artificial sweeteners just never really turned me on. I couldn’t get used to that horrible after taste with aspartame or even saccharin for that matter.
But some people drink gallons of the stuff in Diet Coke and other diet drinks. It blows me away! How do they like that taste? It’s addictive – maybe that’s how. Like cigarettes – if you keep putting it in believing that it’s cool or good or whatever, you develop a taste, but more than that, an addiction that will keep you coming back for more? I think that’s probably it.
There is so much information available on aspartame and the questions surrounding it, that I can’t believe that so many people don’t even know there’s a problem with it, but it’s true. Many people, still don’t know. Many people have no idea that this stuff is a neurotoxin or that there are serious questions and evidence surrounding it.
A few of the health issues surrounding Aspartame and it’s use are:
- Behavioral changes – Aspartame can cross the blood brain barrier and can cause depression and changes in behaviour. Anti depressants are one of the biggest markets for drug companies. A growing problem it would seem, with many lifestyle factors involved. Could the use of Aspatame be one of them?
- Other behavioural changes can include:
- irritability
- aggression
- anxiety
- personality changes
- insomnia
- phobias
- Neurological problems and illnesses – Because Aspartame crosses the blood brain barrier, it has been implicated in brain tumors, MS, Parkinsons disease and more. It has been shown via MS patients taking responsibility for their own health, that Aspartame use can cause the same symptoms as Multiple Sclerosis. Affected people have been diagnosed with MS by their doctors, and after finding out about the Aspartame link have had their symptoms resolve completely when they have stopped drinking diet sodas!
- Other Neurological problems include:
- epileptic seizures
- headaches, migraines and (some severe)
- dizziness and/or unsteadiness
- confusion and/or memory loss
- severe drowsiness and sleepiness
- paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
- severe slurring of speech
- severe hyperactivity and restless legs
- atypical facial pain
- severe tremors
Eye problems – including blindness.
Ear problems – including tinnitus
The following (in italics) is taken from the site www.sweetpoison.com There is a huge amount of info on Aspartame on this site and it’s worth visiting.
Nutrition fact about Phenylalanine in aspartame:
The 1976 Groliers encyclopedia states cancer cannot live without phenylalanine. Aspartame contains 50% phenylalanine.
Phenylalanine is one of the essential amino acids found in proteins, but I am one of the believers that amino acids should be eaten in combination, not in isolated form. Nature provides amino acids in combination; only man isolates them for processing purposes.
Phenylalanine is found naturally in foods such as eggs, milk, bananas, and meat. If you are PKU (Phenylketonuric) or sensitive to phenylalanine, you will react to the phenylalanine in aspartame. You many want to get a blood test to check for this condition. Over the past 20 years, humans have become more aware of PKU reactions because human beings began using isolated phenylalanine to the degree it is harmful to some individuals, many as aspartame side effects. My suggestion would be to research PKU and phenylalanine extensively. Phenylalanine can be very harmful to diabetics.
Ummmm, don’t the run of the mill dietitians tell diabetics to have this stuff? Yep they sure do. Isn’t that interesting…….
Aspartame is responsible for a huge number of adverse effects reported for foods every year – more than any other single additive. It’s history and people who’s lives and health have been and are being affected by it are there for anyone who wishes to start looking for themselves.
If you value your health, remove this stuff from your diet – it doesn’t belong there! It doesn’t belong in your body, my body or your children’s bodies – that’s what amazes me. People give this stuff to their kids, and I realise that some people just don’t know. Until you know, you don’t know so that’s of course forgiveable. What’s not forgivable in my view tho, it when people do know and still give it to their kids! I’ve seen people – many – do that. I personally have given info to people (some close friends and family) about aspartame and yet they still feed it to their children afterwards. That is something I will never understand.
For those of you wondering what you’re going to mix your bourbon with – I don’t know – it’s not my concern. It’s yours. Drink the bourbon straight! If you don’t like the taste, then why are you drinking the stuff? I do know that a lack of bourbon and diet coke won’t cause you to lose your health – drinking it probably will. Soft drinks or soda’s or whatever you call them are best tipped down the sink – It’s the best place for them in my view whether they’re the diet variety or not.
And if you’re worried about putting on weight by not using ‘diet’ varieties of whatever, you need not worry. Aspartame will apparently make you fatter in the long term (you’ve only got to look at the trolleys in the supermarket containing gallons of diet coke and then look at the people pushing them for evidence that this is correct) and it will make it harder for you lose body fat in the long run. It creates changes in the fat cells, making them more resistant to letting go of the fat! So there you go – no need to worry after all.
