Joseph Mercola interviews Samuel Epstein

This is a really interesting interview with Samuel Epstein. Dr Epstein is one of the worlds leading experts on the subject of toxicology and cancer prevention and has spent his whole career lobbying government for change to policies regarding harmful ingredients in products sold to an unsuspecting public. (Samuel Epstein is also an adviser in the creation of the personal care, cleaning and nutritional products that I use and for that, I know that I’m extremely grateful!)

The interview is a bit lengthy (45 minutes or so?), but worth it. (Essential viewing the second half for those living in the USA in particular).

We can’t trust our governments to have our best interests at heart. We must get educated and look after ourselves, or suffer the consequences unfortunately.

Safe ingredients? Maybe, maybe not…..

At work yesterday a workmate received an email advertising a new range of products designed for Mum’s to be and babies which she was going to show a friend who she thought might be interested.  These products are advertised as 100% natural and organic.

These days there are lots of products advertised this way, but unfortunately most of them are misrepresented and some of these companies just blatantly lie about their ingredients (such as Natural Instinct who were prosecuted by the ACCC because they just didn’t bother to put the ingredients such as sodium laureth sulphate, cocamide DEA and cetrimonium chloride on their product ingredient lists on labels even though their products did contain them, and later called SLES and other ingredients by incorrect names and advertised their products as SLS or SLES free and made from 100% natural oils and plant extracts).

The problem is that there’s not really much in the way of legislation covering the area of personal care products and no one is really watching or monitoring what’s going on. The only way that companies such as Natural Instinct get caught is by someone making a complaint and then when they are caught out, they really don’t suffer much at all – a little inconvenience and extra cost maybe, but nothing to really deter companies from doing their best to pull the wool over their customers eyes. No one really knows about cases such as the Natural Instinct one unless like me they’re seriously looking at this subject and keeping their eyes peeled for information.

To get back the email – I decided to have a look at this company with the baby products and it’s ingredients in its 100% natural and organic products for baby. If I hadn’t been interested in this subject and hadn’t learned as much as I have over the past 10 years or so, I’d look at the ingredients and assume that these products would be safe for my baby (if I had one!).

But! While I’d be fairly sure that these products would be a whole lot better and safer than anything you’ll buy in the supermarket for your little bundle of joy, the ingredient lists don’t always tell the whole truth as we’ve seen in the example at the beginning of this story.

The ingredients in one of the baby products are as follows: Purified Water, Certified organic macadamia oil, Certified organic calendula oil, Olive derived emulsifier, Potassium Sorbate, Almond and Vanilla extract.

Looks okay to you? As I said, it may be. But it also may not be. The organic oils are great as long as they are grown under strict organic conditions with good quality soil and haven’t been contaminated by any over sprays from neighbouring farms, or by fumes from passing traffic if on a busy road, or as long as they haven’t been ‘cut’ with other non organic or cheaper oils by unscrupulous suppliers. Sounds very sceptical? These days we must be – there are unscrupulous businesses out there. It’s a fact of life.

The only way to know if an ingredient is what is says it is, is of the potency that it needs to be to be effective and to know that it is not contaminated with anything it shouldn’t be, is to test each batch of ingredients as they come in with a technology such as TLC or Thin Layer Chromotography. Very few companies go to this effort to make sure their products are safe.

The other issue that I see with this ingredient list is the ‘Olive derived emulsifier’. This is not an ingredient name. It’s a description of an ingredient and this type of listing can be used to hide ingredients that the company may not want to disclose. There are various emulsifiers that are derived from Olives or olive oil and some of them such as Polysorbate 80 definitely have serious questions surrounding their safety and are not something I would want to use on myself, let along my baby.

I may be completely wrong about this company listing this ingredient in this fashion, but to me, if they were using an emulsifier that was ‘100% natural and safe’ why would they not use the correct name on their ingredient lists? And if they’ll deceive their customers with one ingredient, does that not say much about the overall integrity of the company? To me it shouts volumes.

These are the types of things to watch out for if you’re serious about looking for ’safe’ products. There are very few companies doing the right thing out there, but there are lots that are jumping on the bandwagon and doing their best to take us all for a ride – a quick ride to cancer and other illness that is.

Propylene Glycol-Would you use Anti Freeze on your baby?

If you use commercial baby wipes, then the answer is probably yes (even though you probably didn’t know it). Every mainstream brand of baby wipes I’ve looked at contain Propylene Glycol – the main ingredient in Anti Freeze. There’s also a very good chance you’re using it on your skin every day, in your eye makeup remover and much more.

So, Propylene Glycol – what is it? Propylene Glycol (or propane-1,2-diol) is a Petrochemical Solvent. It originates from crude oil and it goes through a few processes and becomes Propylene Glycol (or Ethylene Glycol or Polyethylene Glycol – PEG -  similar chemicals with very similar characteristics).

Both ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are clear, colourless, slightly syrupy liquids at room temperature.  Ethylene glycol is odourless but has a sweet taste. Propylene glycol is practically odourless and tasteless.

Some info from the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for Propylene Glycol

Potential Health Effects
———————————-

Inhalation:
Vapor inhalation is generally not a problem unless heated or misted. Exposure to vapors over an extended time period has caused throat irritation and headache. May cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness. Pulmonary edema and central nervous system depression may also develop. When heated or misted, has produced rapid, involuntary eye movement and coma.
Ingestion:
Initial symptoms in massive dosage parallel alcohol intoxication, progressing to CNS depression, vomiting, headache, rapid respiratory and heart rate, lowered blood pressure, stupor, collapse, and unconsciousness with convulsions. Death from respiratory arrest or cardiovascular collapse may follow. Lethal dose in humans: 100 ml (3-4 ounces).
Skin Contact:
Minor skin irritation and penetration may occur.
Eye Contact:
Splashes may cause irritation, pain, eye damage.
Chronic Exposure:
Repeated small exposures by any route can cause severe kidney problems. Brain damage may also occur. Skin allergy can develop. May damage the developing fetus.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Persons with pre-existing skin disorders, eye problems, or impaired liver, kidney, or respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of this substance.

Now, it’s fairly obvious that these substances can cause health problems, they can cause kidney problems and they (as well as Polyethylene Glycol or PEG) are commonly used in skin care as well as other personal care products and many other products including foods in the case of Propylene Glycol.

Propylene Glycol and other glycol ethers are  commonly used in skin care products, eye makeup remover, baby wipes, hair care products, bakery products and many more. They are also the main ingredient in Anti-Freeze.

They are used as humectants, solvent, surfactants and wetting agents. They are used in skin care products because they make the skin feel nice and so appear to be be doing the job.

Propylene Glycol and the other glycol ethers are readily absorbed through the skin and accumulate in organs including the heart, liver and kidneys. You will notice on the MSDS for Propylene Glycol that information on carcinogenic effects, toxicity and other effects are not known – not enough information. However research indicates that there are serious problems with coming into contact with it and there are more definite known issues with Ethylene Glycol.

The chemical companies and personal care companies that put these in their products, would have us believe that even though there is evidence that Propylene Glycol and the other glycol ethers are hazardous to health, it’s ok for us to use them every day in small amounts in various products – does that even make the slightest bit of sense? I don’t think so. The fact that Propylene Glycol is allowed in food is even more bizarre (see my post on the Chocolate Cake ingredients!).

When you use products containing these,  they’re not only being absorbed through your skin and being deposited in your organs causing who knows what health problems in the process, but they’re aging your skin at the same time! This really makes me mad (and it should you too) – that not only are these companies that include these ingredients in their products putting your health at risk, but they’re blatantly lying, ripping you off and taking you for a ride by selling you products that promise to be anti aging when in fact they are having the exact opposite effect – they’re aging your skin probably faster than would happen if you used nothing at all!

So, what do we know about Propylene Glycol so far? It’s a very common ingredient with NO therapeutic benefits. It has some very real concerns around it’s safety. It’s used because it’s cheap and makes skin feel smooth. A run down on Propylene Glycol -

  • Is readily absorbed through the skin and scalp
  • Accumulates in the heart, liver and kidneys causing abnormalities and damage
  • Weakens the immune system
  • Studies have shown that Propylene Glycol is capable of producing both primary irritant skin reactions and allergic sensitisation including contact dermatitis
  • It inhibits skin cell growth in human tests and can damage cell membranes causing rashes, dry skin and surface damage
  • Can cause significant numbers of reacti0ns and primary is irritant to the skin, even in low levels of concentration
  • As above, the MSDS warns users to avoid contact with the skin

Although there are concerns about using Propylene Glycol on the skin, there are even more concerns regarding it’s use in sprays and mists. If you review the MSDS on inhalation and eyes, you’ll understand why and yet it is used commonly in these types of products.

For those with sensitive skins, products containing Propylene Glycol may cause or contribute to skin conditions and I think I could safely say that they would almost certainly make  conditions such as acne, excema or psoriasis worse, but if you look at the ingredients in common acne preparations as well as products designed for other skin conditions, you will often find these ingredients there.

Propylene Glycol is at this point in time thought to not be carcinogenic, but it does have other very real concerns surrounding it’s use and still many questions to be answered. If you had the choice to use products that don’t contain it, then why would you risk your health and your families health by using it? There are safer alternative products on the market that don’t contain Propylene Glycol, or Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or the many other nasty ingredients. Why not switch to safer product? Vote with your $$$ because that’s what these companies listen to, and let them know that we’re not going to continue to be taken for a ride.

Your Health – what’s it worth?

Have you thought about what your health is worth? I know that most people, if you ask them would agree that it’s pretty important, but I don’t believe that most people actually really think about the implications of not having good health maybe until it actually happens to them and for those where a lack of good health comes on slowly, progressively, over a period of time, I think many still don’t actually think about the impact of it on their lives – not really. It gets put down to the aging process and accepted as the way it has to be.

I take my health, and more so,  my responsibility for it, fairly seriously. It’s definitely not perfect, and I doubt it ever will be, but I’m working on it! It’s a work in progress you might say. I use the safest personal care products and cleaning products available, and I take what I’ve learned  to be the best most effective supplements available. I eat organic where possible, buy clean grass fed meat where I can,  free range eggs and poultry and organic ‘real’ sourdough bread. You get the picture!

As you’d realise this doesn’t come cheap and I’m not wealthy (yet!) so how do I manage to afford all this? I manage to afford these things, because I’ve made my health a priority. I still can’t do and take everything that I’d ideally like to if money weren’t an issue, but I do all that I can with the resources that I currently have.

This has been one of my biggest revelations over the past few years – we will always afford whatever we make a priority and that’s the truth. It’s not the lack of money that’s the problem, it’s the lack of importance in our minds. Don’t believe me? Look around you. No matter how low an income people are on, they will manage to buy or do whatever is a priority to them. Whether that be smoking cigarettes, smoking drugs, drinking alcohol, buying and playing video games, watching dvd’s, buying new clothes or shoes, keeping up with the Jone’s, going on holidays, having a cool car or whatever – they can be pleading poverty – can’t afford to pay  the phone bill but spending hundreds or thousands per month on unessential ‘priorities’.

We used to do it! Before I quit smoking and got really interested in health, I remember that we could be absolutely skint, broke, no money and we still always found a way to have cigarettes. They were a priority! Having tobacco was probably more important than anything else – not something that I’m proud of now I must say, I didn’t know any better at the time, never really thought about it  and that’s just the way it was.

I remember before we moved to Australia 20 years ago, we lived in Martinborough, NZ. Our neighbours a couple of doors down lived in a Housing Commission house that was run down, they’d broken windows and it was a bit of a mess. My husband Ray worked very briefly with one of the young fella’s from this family and he was telling Ray about how tough things were and that they were forced to eat WeetBix three times a day for meals a lot of the time. Their power used to get cut off from time to time and I don’t think from memory that they had a car that actually went. However, they managed to spend a lot of time at the pub, smoked cigarettes and every week when the ‘Mr Whippy’ van came around and parked outside their house, (on payday), they’d buy huge quantities of snowfreeze icecreams! Every single week for the two years we lived there, that was the case – Mr Whippy knew exactly where to park his van!

So, back to your health. What price would you put on it? Let’s assume that reading this now, you have ‘good’ health. You work and earn an income, you are able to participate in your favourite hobbies or sports, spend time with those that matter to you and generally live your life in a way that’s satisfactory and enjoyable most of the time.

Now, think about the opposite scenario. You are suddenly ill. You have to give up work, your income is gone. You’re incapacitated and can’t pursue the things you enjoy – your golf, or other sports or hobbies. You can’t have enjoyable time with family as you can’t get out of the house and you’re in too much pain or too sick. What is the price difference between these two scenario’s? Can you put a dollar value on it?

You can in the sense of the difference in income of course – that’s a pretty obvious price. Then there’s the medical bills – doctors, medication, surgery etc. That can be some pretty serious expense I’m told. If you’ve read other parts of my site, you’ll know that I haven’t been to a doctor for many years and don’t really have anything to do with the allopathic medical system, but I’m told it’s getting pretty expensive! The government isn’t subsidising as much as it used to (because it just can’t keep doing that – but that’s a whole other story), so everyone including pensioners are having to fork out more and more themselves for their treatments and they’re not cheap.

Many people have medical insurance or health insurance. The term ‘Health Insurance’ I think is a bit of misnomer. It should be ‘Sickness Insurance’ instead as it is insurance that pays out when you’re health is lacking for the most part. I know that some policies will pay out for some preventative ‘alternative’ treatments, but it’s a token effort generally. If the people paying for very expensive health insurance were instead to put that money spent on premiums, into prevention, then the likelihood of them requiring the surgery or medical treatments that they are insuring for would be massively reduced. The fact that so many people have health insurance, indicates that they expect to need it and that in my view ensures that they will – if only to ‘get their money’s worth’!

I’ve been frustrated many times over the years, as a therapist offering treatments that encourage good health and the ability to live life well, with the excuse ‘I can’t afford it’ coming from people who’s lives were being seriously affected by pain that could in most cases be either completely resolved or at least made manageable with regular treatment.

I also get so frustrated when I share with people knowledge about the chemicals that they’re using on themselves and they’re families every day and they get a little concerned, but then use affordability as an excuse not to switch brands.

The same thing with supplements. Many people don’t take supplements at all and their health will reveal the consequences of that over the long term. Many others, buy supplements from the supermarket or the health food store with no understanding of what they are actually buying. They buy and take a multi vitamin and mineral product for maybe $20 and think they’re getting a good deal, not realising or understanding that what they’re buying may be of dubious quality – synthetic with crushed rock for minerals that our bodies can’t use (and that will cause health problems over the long term) as well as colours, fillers and even plastic coatings with hormone disrupting chemicals such as Pthalates all thrown in for good measure!

My multi vitamin might cost me for example, $40, and so it appears to be expensive. But my questions are:

  • If I spend $20 on a product that doesn’t do what it claims and contains ingredients that are going to undermine my health – is it cheap?
  • If I buy a product that is twice the price, but is many times more effective and will enhance my health and do what it is designed to do – is it expensive?

These questions are not only relevant to supplements, but all products – personal care, cleaning products as well as foods. For example we now buy our bread from the SOL Bakery in Southport. It’s 100% organic ingredients and real sourdough – no yeast. It’s great bread and I’m happy to give them a plug because they’re doing a great job. The loaves, depending on variety, are around $6 each. Most people would balk at the price, but when you go in to the supermarket or to another bakery, the average price is around $4.

It’s the same deal. The $4 loaf from the supermarket or other bakery is made from commercially grown wheat, sprayed with chemicals and grown in soil deficient in minerals. It’s then processed and bleached using chemicals. The bread contains not only this highly processed flour that’s deficient in nutrients, but also preservatives, probably soy, sugars and who knows what else – all playing a part in gradually undermining your health. Is the extra $2 per loaf for the bread that’s not going to ruin my health worth it? Hell yes! It also tastes better, and you don’t eat as much of it, because it’s a lot more satisfying – as real food generally is.

So, how much is your health worth?

How much do we girls risk our health to be beautiful?

Us girls go to a lot of work to be beautiful! (or some of us do!). We do all the showering, the hair stuff, the skin care – cleansers, toners, moisturisers etc, the body lotions. Then there’s the makeup, the perfume etc. It’s a whole lot of commitment, a whole lot of work and a whole lot of chemicals!

It’s estimated that the average women absorbs over 2 kilos of harmful chemicals each year from the products that are supposed to make us appear all healthy and beautiful. That’s the whole idea is to look healthy – I mean health and beauty go together right? Good clear skin, bright clear eyes, white healthy teeth, nice shiny healthy hair. That’s what all the products are for – to make it look like we’re nice and healthy and that in turn makes us more attractive.
The problem is that most of us girls are using products that contain lots of harmful chemicals and don’t even know it. Chemicals that cause cancer and other health problems. Chemicals that make us age faster! Chemicals that make us get sick more often and that make us feel like crap with headaches, PMS, colds and flu and no energy.
I started learning about these chemicals and stopped using these harmful products quite a few years ago now. I’ve got more info on my website www.toxinfreefuture.com if you want to check out the products that are likely to be a problem and you can check out what dangerous ingredients are in the product’s you’re using.
Why do they use these dangerous ingredients? Because they’re cheap! and they look like they do the job. Thing is once you change to using products with ingredients that really do the job, you realise just how cheap and nasty the other stuff is! Trouble is that until you know the difference, you don’t know any better!
